Visiting Itaipú: the options

Itaipú is a hydroelectric plant that Brazil and Paraguay run together, and both sides run their own visitor programs, and they are separate: different operators, different prices and different rules. The Brazilian side is close to Foz do Iguaçu. The Paraguayan side starts in Hernandarias.

Most visitors from the falls choose the Brazilian panoramic tour, which looks at the plant from outside. If you want to see the inside, the Brazilian Especial tour goes into the plant. The figures below are the published ones for 2026.

For a first visit, the panoramic tour is the simple choice. The Especial suits you if you want the technical part. Check the operator's page for the current day, because industrial operations can change visiting times.

The Brazilian tours in detail

Prices and times are the published ones for 2026.

Panoramic tour

The tour costs 63 BRL and lasts about 1 hour 10 minutes. It is an outside visit. Tours start from 8:30 am. One operator page lists the day's end at 5:00 pm and another at 4:00 pm, so confirm the last departure for your day.

Especial tour

The tour costs 185 BRL and takes about 2.5 hours. It follows the panoramic route and then enters the plant: the control room, the generator gallery and a turbine shaft. Places and times are limited each day, so book online. The operator calls the product Itaipu Especial.

Rules for the Especial

Children under 14 are not admitted. Bring photo ID and arrive 30 minutes early for registration and photographing. Shoes must be fastened at the heel, and bags and backpacks are not allowed. The route includes stairs. Student discounts apply only to Brazilian schools, and foreign visitors get half price only with proof of a disability.

Itaipu Iluminada

The Brazilian operator markets an evening tour on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:00 pm. It costs 50 BRL and lasts about 2 hours. It is separate from the Paraguayan light show described below.

Parking

Parking at the Brazilian visitor area costs 28 BRL a day. Residents of the region get 50 percent off.

The Paraguayan side

The Paraguayan operator offers free visits, including the plant, from Hernandarias. Registration is online through the operator's visitor portal. As of 25 September 2026, the daily departures are at 8:00, 9:00, 10:00 and 10:30 am and at 1:10, 2:00 and 2:30 pm. The visit starts at the visitor reception center, and a visitor bus takes you onward.

This is a different country, so check the entry rules for Paraguay for your passport before you plan it. A visit on the Paraguayan side needs its own time and its own registration.

The Paraguayan light show, Iluminación Monumental, had its last performance on 8 August 2026. The operator is modernizing it and announced a construction time of about one year. Do not plan an evening around it. In September 2026 the dam's spillway was opened temporarily. Openings depend on operations and water levels, so they are no reason to plan a visit around them. They are unrelated to the flow of the Iguazú Falls.

Fitting Itaipú into your trip

Itaipú fits well on a day when you are on the Brazilian side anyway. Do the falls in the morning with your timed ticket, then add the panoramic tour in the afternoon, or keep Itaipú for a separate half day. Foz do Iguaçu is the base for this plan, and our Foz do Iguaçu guide shows the other sights and prices on that side. The Brazilian side guide explains the park tickets, and the bird park page covers the other half-day option.

If you only want the main points, take a tour with hotel pickup. Several tours include the Itaipú panoramic ticket and the transfer, but not meals. Check what the ticket covers before you book. The tours page lists more day trips.
